Dr George Higgins
Regional Ambassador (Wales)

George is a final year History PhD researcher and a part-time Graduate Teaching Assistant in the School of History, Law and Social Sciences at Bangor University. His thesis looks at the post-war development of mountaineering activities in Eryri, Wales, focusing on social and cultural impact. He has previously taught on introductory politics modules and currently teaches seminars on twentieth century Britain.
George’s research interests broadly span social and cultural movements across the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, modern Wales, and the use of digital history methodologies. In his MA thesis, he studied the perceptions and presentations of the vegetarian movement in the provincial press of Northern England utilising digital newspaper archives. In both his undergraduate and MA courses he was awarded best overall performance, as well as best dissertation for his MA thesis.
As a Wales regional ambassador for History Lab+, George aims to raise awareness of and gain insights into the challenges facing late-stage PhD and Early-Career Historians through taking an active role in HL+ events. He is particularly interested in employability and freelancing as a history writer and researcher and maintaining a reliable income in a precarious employment landscape.
