Dr Michael Reeve
Co-Chair

Michael is currently Lecturer in Modern British History at The Open University. He previously worked as a Lecturer in History at Bishop Grosseteste University and has also taught at Leeds Beckett University. He was awarded a PhD in History by the University of Hull in 2019, after completing a project funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council.
Michael’s research and teaching interests are varied, spanning nineteenth and twentieth-century Britain and Europe. His work to date has been primarily concerned with military and civilian endurance and resilience in the context of war, with a focus on the effects of naval and aerial bombing on coastal communities during the First World War. He has also published on elements of imperial culture in the context of Victorian and Edwardian urban industrial development. Michael’s first monograph, Bombardment, Public Safety and Resilience in English Coastal Communities during the First World War, was published by Palgrave Macmillan in 2021. His current research project looks at the connections between tobacco consumption and modern war, focusing on the perceived beneficial role of smoking in medical, military, public health and popular discourses on welfare and endurance during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
As a member of the HL+ committee, Michael is interested in representing and advancing the cause of mature students and ECHs from working-class backgrounds. He is also interested in the issue of precarity in academic employment and the impacts this can have on the mental health and wellbeing of postgraduates and Early-Career Historians.
