Dr Amelia Esther Clegg
Membership Officer

Dr Amelia Esther Clegg, an Associate Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, is a historian of socio-cultural warfare of Britain and Southern Africa (1870-1919). Her doctoral research addresses broader issues surrounding the complex nature of British army command through a close analysis of Coldstream Guards regimental officers’ diaries and letters in the South African War. Her first monograph, 2nd Battalion Coldstream Guards in the Great War, reconstructs individual soldiers’ narratives from diary entries, letters, and service records, situating them within the broader context of strategic decisions, methods of warfare, and environmental factors that influenced their fate. She is currently working on her second monograph, which focuses on Garrison Towns in the Northern Cape during the South African War (1900-1902).
