Duncan Hamilton
Regional Ambassador (North-West England)

Duncan Hamilton is a third year PGR at the University of Manchester. He is currently working on an internally-funded PhD thesis concerning literature of the Chartist movement with a particular focus on the publications of Thomas Cooper, one of the movement’s working-class autodidacts. In addition to his PhD research, he has recently contributed a paper on Chartist plays to the annual festival in Newport, South Wales commemorating the region’s radical and Chartist heritage. Duncan also teaches in the Department of English at the University of Manchester, working as a graduate teaching assistant on the wide-ranging Literature and History module. He has previously completed a BA and MA in English at the University of Hull, both also concerned with amplifying the voices of nineteenth-century working-class authors. When not fulfilling academic duties or his responsibilities to HistoryLab+, Duncan volunteers regularly at Elizabeth Gaskell’s House and is currently involved with a Heritage Lottery funded project to establish a young writer’s residency at the House. He is a particularly strong advocate for collaboration between academic and non-academic historians.
