Samantha Hossein
International Ambassador
(Caribbean)

Samantha is currently in the fourth year of her doctorate in History at the University of the West Indies, St Augustine Campus, in Trinidad and Tobago (UWI). Her area of study is the development of mental healthcare in colonial Trinidad and Tobago. Her work explores the institutional structures responsible for the management and care of the mentally ill, including asylums, prisons, colonial hospitals, and houses of refuge. She also examines the way colonial psychiatry is intersected by race, class, and criminality, and how these elements coalesce to further inform mental health policies, methods of treatment, and colonial ideologies on mental illness within a post-emancipation state.
Samantha was the Postgraduate Student Representative for the Postgraduate Student Staff Liaison Committee from 2022-2024 for the Department of History at the UWI. She also successfully completed an internship at the National Archives of Trinidad and Tobago in 2022 whilst pursuing her postgraduate studies.
Samantha is currently a teaching assistant at the UWI, where she tutors undergraduate students in the institution’s foundational course, Caribbean Civilisation.
