Dr Dave Steele
Comms Officer (Website)

Dr Dave Steele is Associate Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and Honorary Research Fellow in the Department of History at University of Warwick having been awarded his PhD by the same institution on The Reputational Power of English Reform Crowds 1816 – 1848. His research suggests that, from evidence that exists for contained events, crowds were significantly smaller than previously thought yet paradoxically successful in projecting an appearance of power, provoking the state into disproportionate shows of force and punitive legislation. Steele has spoken at the Tolpuddle Radical History School and the Kennington Chartist Project. Publications include ‘Peaceably if we may’ in Resist: Stories of Uprising (Comma Press, 2019) and ‘People’s Vote march: when it comes to crowds, history shows it’s not all about size’, The Conversation (March 2019). He is editing a Collection for Routledge in the Warwick Series in the Humanities entitled Political Sedition in Long Nineteenth-Century Britain – Gender, Space and Protest.
