Dr Amelia Esther Clegg

Dr Amelia Esther Clegg, an Associate Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, is a socio-cultural historian of warfare in Britain and Southern Africa (1870-1919). Her work takes a global approach to the history of the British Army in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, examining culture, society, identity, race and politics. Dr Clegg’s research reflects the cultural turn in historiography and the growing attention to Empire and warfare studies, as well as to gender, while contributing to imperial and Commonwealth history, cultural and military history, European history, and trauma history. Her first monograph, 2nd Battalion Coldstream Guards in the Great War, reconstructs individual soldiers’ narratives from diary entries, letters, and service records, situating them within the broader context of strategic decisions, methods of warfare, and environmental factors that influenced their fate. It is available to purchase through the Coldstream Guards Association.

She is currently working on her second monograph examining how military practices impacted civilians and urban spaces, with a focus on martial law and garrison towns during the South African War (1900-1902). Follow Amelia on LinkedIn.
